The Collision Repair Process — What to Expect

If you've never been through a collision repair before, the process can feel confusing and stressful. At Total Care Collision, we believe transparency builds trust. Here's exactly what happens from the moment you contact us to the moment you drive away in your repaired vehicle.

Step 1: First Contact (Day 1)

You call us, text us, WhatsApp us, or upload photos through our website. We respond within 30 minutes. During this first conversation, we gather basic information: your name, phone number, vehicle details, and what happened. If your car isn't drivable, we arrange free towing immediately.

Step 2: Initial Inspection & Estimate (Day 1-2)

Your vehicle arrives at our facility. We perform a thorough visual inspection, photograph the damage from every angle, and write an initial repair estimate. This estimate is sent to your insurance company to initiate the claim process. We also help you with rental car coordination at this stage.

Step 3: Insurance Adjuster Review (Day 2-5)

Your insurance company sends an adjuster (or uses photo-based estimating) to review the damage. We meet with the adjuster at our facility, walk through the damage, and ensure nothing is overlooked. The adjuster writes their own estimate, and we compare it to ours. Any discrepancies are negotiated before work begins.

Step 4: Tear-Down & Supplement (Day 3-7)

Once approved, we begin disassembly. This is where hidden damage is discovered — damage behind panels, inside structural cavities, to wiring harnesses, and to components not visible during the initial inspection. Hidden damage is documented with photos and a supplement is submitted to your insurance for additional approval. This step is critical and is where insurance companies often try to save money.

Step 5: Parts Ordering (Day 4-10)

We order all necessary parts, prioritizing OEM components. Parts availability varies — common parts may arrive next-day, while some OEM parts for newer or luxury vehicles may take 5-7 business days. We track every order and communicate any delays immediately.

Step 6: Repair & Refinish (Day 7-14)

The actual repair work begins: structural correction (if needed), panel replacement or repair, body filler and prep work, primer, paint, and clear coat application in our controlled paint booth. Each stage is performed to manufacturer specifications and inspected before moving to the next phase.

Step 7: Reassembly & Quality Check (Day 12-16)

All components are reassembled: trim, lights, moldings, sensors, and glass. Every system is tested — electrical, ADAS features, mechanical operation of doors, hood, and trunk. A final quality inspection checks paint finish, panel alignment, and overall appearance. Your car receives a detail wash.

Step 8: Delivery (Day 14-18)

We call you when your vehicle is ready. During pickup, we walk you through every repair, explain your lifetime warranty, and answer any questions. We coordinate your rental car return and provide all documentation for your records.

Typical Timelines

Minor damage (bumper, dent): 3-5 business days. Moderate collision: 7-10 business days. Major collision with structural damage: 14-21 business days. These timelines include parts delivery and insurance supplement approval, which are the two most common causes of delay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Parts availability and insurance supplement approval are the top two. OEM parts for newer vehicles can take 5-7 days to arrive, and insurance companies sometimes take 3-5 days to approve supplements for hidden damage. We push to minimize both.

We provide photo updates at every stage. If you'd like to visit in person, you're always welcome — just call ahead so we can have your vehicle accessible for viewing.

We perform a detailed quality inspection before every delivery. During your pickup walkthrough, if anything doesn't meet your expectations, we address it before you leave. Our lifetime warranty covers any issues that may arise after delivery.
